Rooted In Culture curated by Lyn Logan-Grimes

The exhibition gives artists of color an opportunity to define what culture means to them using a diverse range of mediums.

“Most of the artists in the show are emerging artists,” said curator Lyn Logan-Grimes. “It’s really important for me because a lot of young, talented artists don’t really know where to start to get their work shown.”

Creative Resilience curated by Lauren Pond from Fresh A.I.R Gallery

While the physical toll of COVID-19 is well known, the impact of the current pandemic on mental health has been severe and less discussed: According to the CDC, as of June 2020, 40 percent of American adults reported struggling with substance use or mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and traumatic stress. However, stigma, lack of access to healthcare, and other inequities may prevent people from seeking the help they need.

In partnership with All People Arts, Fresh A.I.R. Gallery asked artists how they are using their creative work to navigate the pandemic and to help process and cope with current circumstances. We received more than 110 exceptional submissions, and are honored to exhibit select pieces.

In This Time curated by April Sunami

The show is a response to the recent wave of racial justice protests, featuring six African American artists from the South Side or affiliated with the South Side. Each artist’s work is a response to a famous Nina Simone quote: “An artist’s duty … is to reflect the times.” In October, April Sunami will facilitate a discussion with the six artists about the topic and their work.
